1. You likely will need to slow down, say no to things, or adjust your lifestyle in this transition. There are many new demands being placed on you and your body right now. Be sure to set realistic expectations for yourself and those around you.
2. Pregnancy is a time where it’s all about YOU (& your growing babe). Be sure to listen to your body & what it needs. Honor the signals from your body. Take a step back from people and things that are taking too much from you. It’s okay (& recommended) to put you first.
3. You’re probably going to feel a level of tired you’ve never felt. You’re making a person from scratch! Take the nap! Go to sleep early! You deserve it!
4. Drink that water! Aim for 64-96 oz per day (pale yellow/clear urine is ideal).
5. Do your research on quality supplements that contain folic acid.
6. Sharing the news is a very personal decision. However, I strongly believe having your best support people on your side early on is important. My coworkers were among the first to know, because my symptoms could require modifications, and I really needed their support.
7. An empty stomach increases the intensity of pregnancy sickness. Have some snacks handy first thing in the morning, in your bag, on the go, etc.
My favorites: applesauce pouches, fruit, crackers, cheese sticks.
8. Which leads me to: it’s common to experience sickness and/or food aversions, especially in the early days of pregnancy. While nutrition is SO important during pregnancy, give yourself a break during this peak sickness window. If all you can stomach are plain carbs at times (ME👋), get the best quality you can and fill your belly! Eat the good stuff when you can tolerate it. The sickness and aversions will likely disappear/lessen by the second trimester. Then you can really focus on consuming nutrient-dense foods.
