During pregnancy, there is a seemingly never-ending to-do list leading up to your baby’s arrival. Some (most) parents find this process extremely overwhelming, especially while juggling all of life’s other demands.
As a doula, nurse, and new mom myself, I’ve probably spent hundreds of hours researching baby products.
Because the process of curating the perfect baby registry can be daunting, time consuming, and overwhelming, I have pulled together the ultimate registry guide to save your sanity! I’ve done the research for you, and have linked all my favorite products in this post.
I am what some would label as a “crunchy mom,” but really I just do my best to limit the amount of toxins in our home.
My goal is bringing sustainable, non-toxic, and durable products into my space, especially when it comes to the items my baby will be exposed to.
Therefore, this guide was thoughtfully curated to include products that are free of harmful materials. Some items (outdoor summer gear) are polyester, since they don’t have an alternative. I have also included a few plastic options (example: bottle brushes), if the bamboo alternative is not desirable for your preferences.
Read on to make your life a little easier when preparing for your sweet baby to arrive.
Details to consider when building your registry:
-Babies have sensitive skin. Opting for natural fibers and fragrance-free products will help to minimize irritations. Do your best to opt for unscented, fragrance free soaps, laundry detergent, lotions, etc.
-Organic cotton is a great clean option for clothing. There are several affordable brands to choose from (Little Planet by Carters, Honest Baby, H&M, Rabbit & Bear at Marshalls to name a few). I love shopping secondhand to find awesome brands at a reasonable price (plus it’s good for the Earth)! Once Upon a Child is one of my favorite stores, they always seem to have a good variety of organic clothing.
-Natural wood, glass, silicone, & stainless steel are better alternatives to plastic.
-Just because plastic is “BPA free” doesn’t mean it doesn’t have other dirty ingredients- it’s best to steer clear when possible.
-Polyester is derived from plastic, choose natural fibers when possible (cotton, silk, linen, & wool).
-Fleece/fuzzy pajamas can overheat baby/cause rashes. Opt for layering cotton clothing as needed.
-Many furniture items and toys are made with paints/finishes that give off VOCS, which worsen air quality/can lead to health problems. Look for the Greenguard Certification if clean products are a priority for you.
-Many car seats contain fire retardant chemicals. If this is a concern for you, opt for Greenguard Certified brands & confirm the car seat is flame retardant free (the options listed here are free from these chemicals).
